Brother, sister —
As leaders, we have been conditioned our entire lives to pursue the kind of person we think we need.
We chase the resume. We chase the experience. We chase the credentials, the skills, and the personality profile that looks like it will “fit the job.”
But far too few of us have been trained to pursue the type of person God actually designed for the work.
This single misunderstanding may be one of the most expensive blind spots in both the Church and in Kingdom businesses today.
Even inside the local church we see this confusion. One of our youth pastors recently shared with me that he felt he was a solid Apostle, but hoped he would be recognized as a Pastor — because that was the role he was hired for. When I explained that the modern use of the word “Pastor” has been greatly dumbed down, and showed him how Paul operated as a clear Apostle — planting churches, establishing doctrine, creating systems, writing processes and controls, appointing leaders, and multiplying — it was like a light came on for him.
He wasn’t failing as a Pastor. He was wired as an Apostle being forced into a pastoral role.
If the Church still struggles with this, is it any wonder most Christian businesses do too?
I saw this clearly in a recent turnaround for a specialty construction company. Revenue had been declining for six years and the company was in real trouble. The owner — a solid Teacher by wiring — was a classic tradesman who started the business. He was excellent at collaborating with clients, designing beautiful work, and delivering quality. When times were good, selling was easy. But when the market tightened, his follow-up on bids became awful. He would subconsciously find other things to do rather than chase customers. They were losing almost every bid except those from long-time returning clients.
He wasn’t lazy. He was simply wired as a Teacher, not an Evangelist (the natural salesperson) or Apostle (the system builder). Forcing him to carry the full weight of sales follow-up was like asking a gifted mechanic to also be both the rainmaker and the operations manager. The mismatch was costing the company dearly.
God never left us without a blueprint.
In Ephesians 4:11–13, the Apostle Paul reveals the Five-Fold Ministry — the exact framework Jesus gave His church so that we might grow into the fullness of Christ. This same blueprint works with explosive power inside Kingdom businesses.
The Five Types God Designed:
- Prophet (The Visionary) — Sees what others cannot. Brings bold direction, innovation, and alignment to the big picture.
- Apostle (The Integrator / Master Builder) — Turns vision into systems, order, and scalable processes. Loves building Management Operating Systems, Rocks, Scorecards, and structures that allow the business to grow without chaos.
- Evangelist (The Growth Engine) — Naturally wins hearts, customers, and talent. Creates momentum and expands reach.
- Pastor (The Shepherd) — Excels at building healthy culture, caring for people, resolving conflict, and maintaining relational and spiritual health.
- Teacher (The Equipper / Technical Specialist) — Masters knowledge and transfers it. These are your electricians, plumbers, engineers, accountants, analysts, and skilled tradespeople who document standards, build training systems, and turn tribal knowledge into organizational strength.
When these five gifts are recognized, activated, and properly seated, the business begins to operate the way the Body of Christ was designed to function — with synergy, multiplication, and far less drama.
This is why right people in right seats is not enough.
You can have the right kind of people… but if they are not operating in their God-given type, you will still experience unnecessary friction, heroics, and limited fruit.
The Training Rheostat — documented, current, and followed competencies — then takes these properly typed and seated people and moves them through Readiness Level progression so they can consistently operate at God’s realistic ceiling of 65% sustained efficiency.
Kingdom Action Step This week, set aside time before the Lord with your current team list.
