What 10-10-80 Actually Looks Like in a Real Business

Brother, sister — let me speak directly to the part of you that is tired of giving when there is nothing left.

You have sacrificed for years. You skipped your own paycheck so the team could be paid. You delayed personal needs, family plans, and rest so the company could keep moving. You carried the weight while presenting the image of success. And instead of getting easier, the job got harder. The pressure increased. The margin stayed thin. The peace never arrived.

Now someone talks about tithing 10% off the top and it feels like one more demand on an already empty tank.

I understand that feeling because I am a small business owner and have owned small businesses. I know what it is to carry the weight, to go without, and to wonder when the company will finally give something back instead of constantly taking.

Here is the truth that changes the entire conversation: It is not your money. It is not the government’s money. It is God’s money.

He does not need it. He already owns everything. But He expects you to use what He has blessed you with wisely. When we treat the resources as our own hard-earned reward that we are entitled to protect, we step out of stewardship and into ownership. That posture keeps the bleed alive and the peace away.

This article is not here to shame the resistance. It is here to show you a different path — one where order comes first, the silent bleed stops, and giving becomes the overflow of a healthy system rather than another sacrifice pulled from scarcity.

Elizabeth’s Story – From Drowning to Overflow

Elizabeth owned a home health care company. On paper the contracts were accurately bid. In reality they consistently fell short. She walked around looking successful while she was drowning inside.

The numbers told the real story:

  • 26% of her accounts were more than 90 days old
  • P&L crossover sat at Day 24
  • Margins averaged only 12.3% when they should have been closer to 30%
  • Employee operating expenses ran 19% over budget
  • Expense reports that were supposed to be turned in every Thursday by 3:00 PM routinely arrived weeks late

She had gone months without taking a paycheck just to cover expenses and fund expansion. She was in debt. The constant pressure had produced a medical crisis. When she came to us, we were her last realistic option before she shut the doors.

We did not start with a sermon on tithing. We started with order.

We locked down the finances immediately. All payments moved to 30 days unless specific contract terms required otherwise. Accounts over 60 days were suspended until paid in full, then placed on an aggressive collection process. We fixed the chronic delay in expense reports. We focused hard on production and streamlined the work. Margins climbed from 12.3% to 28%. We realigned roles and responsibilities using Five-Fold principles — right people in the right seats — so the team stopped working against itself.

The results came quickly:

  • Within 40 days, P&L crossover moved from Day 24 to Day 7
  • Within 90 days, Elizabeth began actively tithing to five charities selected by an employee panel

What changed for her personally was just as important. She finally had peace. Her family had peace. For the first time in years she was able to sponsor her children’s sports teams — teams that went on to compete for State Championships. The business no longer consumed everything. It began to serve the people she loved most.

That is what Covenant Wealth looks like when it is installed in a real company.

What 10-10-80 Actually Means in Practice

Most Christian owners run their cash in reverse order:

Operations consume everything (often more than 100% through rework, delays, and chaos). Whatever is left becomes the “tithe and profit.”

The result is predictable: chronic shortage, burnout, delayed personal income, and the quiet belief that God is always asking for more while the company stays tight.

10-10-80 reverses the order and makes it a covenant:

  • 10% Tithe — first fruits, off the top, before anything else
  • 10% Profit — locked next (owner compensation, tax reserve, reinvestment, legacy building)
  • 80% Operations — the business must live within this number

This is not a theory. It is a forcing function. If operations cannot live on 80%, the bleed is immediately exposed and must be fixed upstream — in processes, people, production, and culture. You stop chasing profit as a lagging indicator at the end of the month and start producing it through order at the beginning.

Profit is the body count after the battle. You cannot obtain consistent profit while operational and cash disorder are still tolerated. 10-10-80 forces the truth into the light and demands that the root problems be solved.

The Second Resistance: “Who Do I Tithe To?”

Even when an owner accepts the principle of first-fruits giving, a second and very real resistance often appears: “I don’t know where it should go — or I don’t trust where it might go.”

Jesus did not command the rich young man to give everything to the temple. He told him to sell what he had, give to the poor and the needy — those unable to fend for themselves — and then follow Him. The heart of the command is generosity toward people who cannot repay, not institutional loyalty for its own sake.

Here is the practical counsel I give owners:

  1. Tithe to your local church if you have one and trust the leadership.
  2. If you do not have a church home, give to a clear faith-based charity that serves the poor, the vulnerable, or the broken (Code of Vets, St. Jude, and similar organizations).
  3. If you have neither, form a small employee committee — preferably led and overseen by trusted long-timers — and ask them to make recommendations.

This third option does something powerful. It honors the people who have carried the company for years. The long-timers are usually the ones who care most about doing right by the community and by the team. When they help direct the giving, two things happen: the owner is released from the decision burden, and the long-timers experience real dignity and ownership in how the company’s fruit is used.

Kenneth’s Story

Kenneth had neither a church nor a favorite charity. We helped him form a small employee committee overseen by long-time team members. That committee recommended three local churches that various employees already attended.

Over the course of one year, Kenneth’s consistent tithe contributed to more than 200 people coming to faith in Jesus. One of those churches — the home church of a long-time account manager — grew from roughly 60 older members to 158, including young families. The youth program that had nearly died was revitalized. Kenneth’s company also built two heated baptismals for those small churches so they could baptize year-round.

The long-timers did not just watch money leave the company. They helped decide where it went, and they saw tangible fruit in places they personally cared about. That changes the entire atmosphere around giving.

Biblical Foundation

It is God’s money. He does not need it. He expects wise stewardship of what He places in our hands.

Malachi 3:10 — “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven…”

Luke 16:10–11 — “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much… If you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?”

Deuteronomy 8:18 — “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant…”

Jesus’ words to the rich young man still stand: give to the poor and the needy, then follow Him. The point is not institutional preservation. The point is open-handed stewardship that multiplies.

How to Begin This Week (Practical Next Steps)

Before you hire anyone (including me), do the following:

  1. Pull the last six months of deposits and actual spending. Calculate what percentage truly went to tithe, to owner profit, and to operations. Face the real numbers without spinning them.
  2. On the very next deposit, execute 10-10-80 transfers — even if the amounts feel small at first. Start the covenant.
  3. If you do not currently have a clear place to give, form a small employee committee this month (include or let long-timers lead it) and ask them for recommendations.
  4. Run the free Rheostat & Compass Diagnostic at https://tfcigroup.com/diagnostic/ and pay particular attention to your Financial Compass score and estimated bleed.
  5. Begin a basic 13-week cash plan this week so you can watch the impact of the new order in real time.

These steps cost nothing but honesty and a decision.

The Kingdom Flip

When the business stops bleeding, the owner stops drowning. When the owner stops drowning, the family begins to breathe again. When first-fruits giving becomes consistent and the long-timers help direct it, multiplication follows — in the company, in the family, and in the Kingdom.

Elizabeth went from months without a paycheck, Day 24 crossover, and 12.3% margins to Day 7 crossover, 28% margins, personal and family peace, and the ability to sponsor her children’s teams on the path to State Championships.

Kenneth’s tithe, directed with the help of long-timers, helped lead more than 200 people to Christ, grew a small church from 60 to 158, revitalized a youth program, and provided heated baptismals so baptisms could happen year-round.

That is Covenant Wealth. Not leftover giving from scarcity. First-fruits giving that becomes natural once order is installed — and that honors both the Owner of the resources and the people who have faithfully carried the work.

The pretending stops here. The thriving — and the multiplication — can begin now.
